Tracking archaeological and historical mines using mineral prospectivity mapping.
2014
13 pages; International audience; The present study proposes a technological transfer from modern mining prospection to the field of archaeology, providing a methodology to facilitate the discovery of ancient mining sites. This method takes advantage of the thousands of geochemical analyses of streambed sediments, performed by national geological surveys to inventory mineral substances. In order to delineate geochemical anomalies, the datasets are treated following two different approaches: Exploratory Data Analysis and a fractal-based method often recognised as more powerful. Mineral prospectivity maps are then obtained by combining the results with a geographical information system. The s…

Cattle as actors in a pastoral landscape. Gis analysis of an agropastoralist group
2018
In the study of pastoral landscapes, ethnoarchaeology can incorporate first-hand information on material features and herding prac- tices and identify the active role of domestic animals in such practices. The Mursi are a present day transhumant agro-pastoralist group, which are specialized in the livestock herding of cattle (Bos indicus). This study examines evidence from this animal behaviour and its needs, which allows us to enrich a particular construction of a herding landscape in contemporary SW Ethiopia. Remote sens- ing techniques are employed to obtain landscape snapshots of the Mursi main pasture area, which are contrasted with fieldwork data. Moreover, recent improvement in digit…

The Bronze Age in Lorraine: a proposed model of the settlement
2022
Thirty years of assiduous preventive archaeology practice in Lorraine have built up a stock of data that can be used for numerous archaeological problems with a spatial focus. For the Bronze Age, as for the other chronological periods, the archaeological occupations discovered during diagnostics and excavations are strongly correlated with current developments (motorways, TGV, housing estates, quarries, etc.). These occupations must be discussed in order to estimate their spatial representativeness. Similarly, the landscape characterisation, in which the occupations highlighted are situated, is an important step in defining the types of settlement. As most of the data comes from the national …
The sustainability of olive orchard planting management for different harvesting techniques: An integrated methodology
2019
Abstract The globalization of the olive oil market has caused greater competitiveness in terms of olive oil quality and production costs and the main countries interested in olive growing, have introduced efficient planting design and horticultural techniques in order to meet these requirements. In this paper the sustainability of olive orchard planting management for different olive fruit-harvesting methods has been assessed on the basis of the data gathered by the Geographic Information System and processed using a Multi-Criteria Decision Making Analysis. In particular, three different agronomic scenarios have been analyzed and a specific cultivar has been considered in order to ensure th…
Mapping floristic diversity: a case study in Sicily
2021
This paper presents an operational methodology to map and analyze the floristic richness of “target species” in Natura 2000 sites, making use of G.I.S. tools and procedures. A Floristic diversity map (scale 1:50,000), covering an area of 612 km2, was produced by a team of experts as part of the management plans of “Madonie Mountains” Sites of Community Importance (SCIs), located in Sicily (Italy). The primary grid map represents the richness of “target species”, which include species of Community interests, taxa on the National Red List, endemic and threatened, species protected under International Conventions, taxa of phytogeographic importance. Secondary data frames include a three-dimens…
DETERMINATION OF THE IMPACTS OF LAND USE CHANGE ON WATER BASIN USING REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
2016
The population has been increasing as a result of mass immigration in Istanbul. An urbanization process continues and it causes serious increases in urban areas while decreasing the amount of natural environment. This uncontrolled and illegal urbanization accompanied by insufficient infrastructure has caused degradation of cropland and forested areas in the metropolitan area, especially in water basin area. The watershed basins inside the metropolitan area have accelerated the land-cover changes, which have negative impacts on water quality of the basins. The Terkos water basin, one of the seven water basins of Istanbul providing drinking water, was selected as a study area. In order to und…
Monitoring and predicting sediment yield in a small Sicilian basin
2001
Identifying areas of a basin that are most sensitive to erosion have stimulated the study of within–basin variability of the sediment–delivery processes and the use of spatially distributed models. To verify the reliability of a sediment–delivery distributed model applicable at the morphological unit scale (i.e., the area of clearly defined aspect, length, and steepness), experiments were carried out at mean annual and event scales in a small Sicilian basin. A Geographical Information System is briefly presented into which the measurements carried out at the basin outlet (runoff, sediment yield, etc.) and other point and areal information (soil erodibility, digital terrain model, etc.) were…
